GRAPH - Spanish-English Interpreter Graduates

Why this is important:
Iowa's Latino population continues to grow. The Latino population represents 4% of Iowa's current population and is expected to more than triple by 2030, to 12% of the state population. An important need exists to help address language barriers and promote essential communications between Spanish and English speaking Iowans within the courts, the health care field and social services agencies.

What we're doing about this:
The Iowa Interpreter Program was enacted in 2004. The Division of Latino Affairs was charged with creating a standard system to qualify Spanish-English interpreters for generalized and specialized purposes and to maintain a roster of individuals qualified to provide interpreter services for the courts, health care and social services agencies. Latino Affairs has worked with Des Moines Area Community College (DMACC) to enroll and graduate qualified interpreters through DMACC. The first enrollees entered the program in August 2006.
