Why this is important:
The federally funded Low-Income Home Energy Assistance
Program block grant assists low-income households
in paying a portion of their energy costs for
the winter heating season. The program also provides
energy crisis assistance for households facing
potentially life-threatening situations, and
client education to encourage regular
utility payments, promote energy awareness
and encourage reduction of energy use.
What we're doing about this:
The division annually leverages state and local
community action efforts to qualify for
additional federal energy assistance funds
to supplement the regular Low-Income Home Energy
Assistance Program (LIHEAP) funds. The division
has established a partnership with the Iowa
Association of Community Action
Agencies to seek additional private sector
funding sources for the Low-Income Home
Energy Assistance Program, including efforts
to increase contributions
to utility company customer contribution funds
and other private sector funding sources,
and expand participation in the Telephone
Lifeline program. The results in FY06 were
based on an increase of $198,182 in customer
contributions, an increase in the number of
Telephone Lifeline participants of 15,541 resulting
in $1,398,690 in additional funds, and an increase
in the federal leveraging grant of $21,010.
