NOTE: The percent of Iowans with health insurance coverage has remained steady fro 1999-2000 to 2004-2005. The current percent is tied with 2 states for best in the nation.

NOTE: The percent of Iowa children age 18 and under with health insurance coverage has remained relatively stable at 92% to 95%. The current percent is tied with 7 states for best in the nation.

Why this is important:
Having health insurance is an important way Iowans receive access to quality health care. These measures tell us how well we are doing in providing this access for all Iowans, children, and minorities.

What we're doing about this:
We are working with businesses to make them aware of the importance of providing health insurance for their employees. We are reaching out to families to build awareness of health insurance offered by the state of Iowa, such as Medicaid and HAWK-I.

Number of Medicaid enrollees using Home and Community Based Services compared to Nursing Facilities.

Why this is important:
Offering home and community based services helps the elderly and persons with disabilities achieve the greatest level of independence possible. Providing these services costs less than providing institutional care.

What we're doing about this:
We are increasing the availability of home and community based services as an alternative to nursing homes and other institutional care.
