Department Performance Plan - A snapshot of what the department does and
how well it does it. The plan helps pinpoint improvement opportunities and implement
strategies to achieve better results. With the plan, departments can better 1)
make informed decisions, and 2) tell Iowans and other stakeholders what they have accomplished.
Department Strategic Plan - Sets out department goals and strategies for a
3-5 year period, aligns them with customer needs, and helps target scarce
resources more effectively by clarifying desired results. Internal and external
customers should be able to clearly see the goods or services the department
intends to provide, and the strategies they will employ to achieve those results.
When done well, strategic planning helps department leaders to organize, direct,
and support strategies leading to results.
